Introduction to Matcha

Matcha is much more than just a trendy drink—it’s a genuine part of Japanese tea culture. The bright green powder is made from carefully cultivated and gently processed green tea leaves. In Japan, the production and enjoyment of matcha have a centuries-old tradition that is closely linked to the famous tea ceremony, known as “chanoyu.” Here, harmony, respect, and mindfulness take center stage—values that are also reflected in the modern enjoyment of a matcha latte.

Today, matcha has long since taken the world by storm: whether as a classic tea, a creamy latte, or a sophisticated ingredient in the kitchen—this Japanese product delights with its unique aroma and intense color. In trendy cafés and restaurants, the matcha latte has become an indispensable trend beverage. The fusion of tradition and modern preparation makes matcha a true moment of indulgence, conveying a piece of Japanese history and way of life in every cup.

The Most Important Information First

  • Prep time: 5 minutes

  • Serving size: 1 glass

  • Equipment: Bamboo whisk/milk frother, teaspoon, strainer, matcha bowl, and a cup or glass

  • Difficulty: Easy

Ingredients for your matcha latte

  • ½ tsp matcha powder (about 1 heaping bamboo spoon)

  • 30–50 ml warm water (approx. 80°C)

  • 100 ml additional water (also approx. 80°C)

  • 50–100 ml frothed milk (dairy or plant-based)

  • Optional sweeteners: Various types of sugar, such as cane sugar or coconut blossom sugar, as well as alternative sweeteners like honey, dates, stevia, or agave syrup. The sweetness can be adjusted to taste—natural sweeteners are a healthy alternative to sugar.

Preparation: (Iced) Matcha Latte in 5 Steps:

It usually takes about 5 minutes to make a Matcha Latte.

1. Sift
the matcha. Sift the matcha powder through a fine sieve into a bowl—this prevents lumps in the drink.

2. Mix and froth
the matcha Pour about 100 ml of slightly cooled, boiled water (no hotter than 80°C) over the sifted powder. Whisk vigorously with a chasen (bamboo whisk) until a fine foam forms. Optionally, you can also use a milk frother.

3. Froth
the milk. Froth 50–100 ml of milk—whether cow’s milk, oat milk, or almond milk—and heat it to about 60 to 70°C before pouring it into a cup or glass.

Tip: Add a few ice cubes to the glass to easily turn it into an iced matcha latte.

4. Combine
the matcha and milk. Carefully pour the creamy matcha over the milk—for a beautiful color gradient. The combination of matcha and milk creates a harmonious flavor experience that perfectly balances both the bitterness and the creaminess.

5. Optional: Sweeten to taste
If you like, sweeten your matcha latte with a little honey, maple syrup, or agave nectar. Enjoy every sip and experience the special aroma and Japanese tea culture in your glass.

The matcha latte should be freshly prepared and enjoyed immediately for the best flavor experience.

Matcha with a Twist: Two Delicious Variations

Strawberry Matcha Latte

This summery variation on the matcha latte stands out thanks to its unique combination of matcha and strawberries. Puree 3–4 ripe strawberries with 1 tsp maple syrup and pour the puree into the glass as the first layer. Then, as in the basic recipe, pour in the frothed milk first and top it off with the matcha. Add a few ice cubes to turn it into a refreshing Iced Matcha Latte with strawberries—for a fruity treat.

Mango Matcha Latte

This exotic variation on the matcha latte is sweet, exotic, and perfect for hot days: Blend about 100 g of ripe mango with a splash of water or (plant-based) milk into a smooth puree. Pour it into the glass as the bottom layer, followed by the milk (or milk alternative), and top it off with the freshly prepared matcha. The combination of matcha and mango creates a harmonious flavor experience. For an extra burst of freshness, simply add a few ice cubes—and voilà, you’ve got a refreshing iced matcha latte with a mango flavor.

Tips and Tricks

With a few simple tips, your matcha latte will become a real treat! Be sure to use high-quality organic matcha powder—it makes all the difference in flavor and ensures a particularly delicate aroma. For the perfect blend, always start by stirring the matcha powder with a little water until smooth and whisking it into a froth before adding the milk. This creates a creamy latte without any lumps.

Feel free to experiment with different variations: A hint of strawberries or other fruits adds a fruity note to your matcha latte and makes the drink a real eye-catcher. Your matcha latte looks especially beautiful when served in a glass—this really lets its intense green color shine. Whether served classically hot or as an iced matcha latte with ice cubes: With these tips, you’re guaranteed to make it perfectly and can fully enjoy this modern, trendy drink from Japanese tea culture.
